How MILD Addresses Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, Dr. Brian Klagges performs a spectrum of interventional spine procedures, with a focus on those that are minimally invasive. The surgeries Brian Klagges, MD, undertakes include minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MILD).

An outpatient procedure designed to relieve pressure that builds up in the spine, MILD addresses the degenerative condition lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). This involves the spinal canal narrowing in such a way that the spinal canal nerves within the lower back become compressed (similar to a straw that develops a kink).

Symptoms of LSS include numbness or pain in the lower back when standing straight, as well as tingling and heaviness in the posterior and upper legs when walking. With the pain increasing as one ages, it’s experienced by approximately 20 percent of US patients above the age of 60. MILD eliminates or reduces the pressure placed on the spinal nerves by restoring space within the spinal canal. Working with imaging equipment, the physician employs specialized surgical tools in removing tiny pieces of thickened ligament and bone to relieve the pressure on the spinal canal nerves.
