A Look at Simulation-Based Training in Anaesthesiology

broken image

Anesthesiology is a medical specialty that involves delicate and life-threatening events. Therefore, no room for error exists. Anesthesiologists go through several years of schooling and training. The training has evolved; individuals can participate in simulation-based training to gain experience.

Simulation-based training is a method of training anesthesiologists by enacting real-life clinical situations using prototypes and imitations. It augments the existing training methods of experimental learning. Thus, when anesthesiologists enter operating rooms, they have trained in similar environments.

Academic anaesthesiologists first adopted simulation-based training. Then, anesthesiology training institutions incorporated the programs in laboratories for education and research.

The simulation laboratories help trainers teach basic to advanced concepts of the anesthesiology career path. The programs consist of mock operating rooms, control rooms, and debriefing areas. Most mock operating rooms have mannequins that serve as interactive human patient simulators. The mannequins are connected to physiological monitoring systems and anesthesia machines to enhance training.
